Tropical Update: Tropical moisture surge bringing heavy rain and dangerous seas to Houston
video

Stay safe, Houston! A major tropical moisture surge is on track to drench our city next week. The National Hurricane Center is eyeing a potential threat brewing in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico?there's a 50/50 chance we might see a low-pressure system or even a tropical depression forming. No matter what's coming our way, brace for a wet week ahead!

Tropical Update: Potential systems being monitored
video

During this second week of hurricane season, tropics are heating up with 3 potential systems the national hurricane center is monitoring. One is off the southeast US coast with a low chance for development. The second is in the southern Gulf of Mexico with now a MEDIUM 40% chance to develop into a tropical system. The third is in the eastern Pacific with just a low shot to become a tropical depression or storm. The disturbance in the Gulf will likely stay south of Houston but will bring tropical moisture and higher rain chances next week.

Tropical Update: Areas of concern being monitored
video

The tropics are heating up with 3 areas of concern that the National Hurricane Center will be monitoring. There's an area around Florida, the Southwest Gulf of Mexico & in the eastern Pacific that's being monitored for tropical cyclone development. In Southeast Texas, our main focus will be the possible development of a broad area of low pressure in the SW Gulf of Mexico. Right now, there's a 30% chance that a tropical system could develop in the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico over the next 7 days. If it develops, this system should stay to our south but will spread a plume of tropical moisture our way early next week. This will mean the risk for tropical downpours that could increase our flood threat. Models are showing the possibility of 2-4" of rain through Tuesday for parts of the area. Keep checking back for more updates!

Tropical Update: First tropical wave in the Gulf
video

The first tropical wave of the season has formed in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, Invest 90-L. Tropical moisture from this new disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico will bring a big flood threat to South Florida in the next few days. This disturbance will not impact SE Texas. But another big plume of tropical moisture is forecast to surge into the Gulf early next week. There's a chance a weak Gulf low could develop. But whether we get a tropical system or not, our rain chances will likely be going up early next week. So plan on more rain that could be heavy at times on Monday and Tuesday. Keep checking back as we get more model updates.
