Syrian troops launch offensive in central Homs province

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syrian government forces launched an offensive Thursday in the central province of Homs under the cover of Russian airstrikes in an attempt to clear the central region of militants and open the highway between Syria's third and fourth largest cities, a military official and activists said.  

Kosovo opposition uses tear gas to disrupt Parliament

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Opposition lawmakers angry at Kosovo's recent deals with Serbia and Montenegro have set off tear gas in Parliament, forcing the suspension of the session. Lawmakers left the chamber on Thursday after witnesses said a tear gas canister was opened in the opposition seats, followed by one or two others.  

Austria: swastika carved on victim's forehead

VIENNA (AP) — Austrian officials say a man is in custody for alleged crimes that include carving a swastika into another man's forehead. State prosecutor Erich Habitzl says the victim was riding his bicycle when four masked men pushed him to the ground and carved the Nazi symbol. Habitzl said Thursday that the main suspect is in investigative custody, while the other three remain at liberty.
