As residents in the neighborhood continue to deal with rare cancer diagnoses, recent EPA samples show a need for more testing of soil, gas, groundwater and sewers.

Houston police are investigating after multiple people were shot in the Greater Fifth Ward area on Wednesday night.

Houston Police have filed charges against Quendarious Emerson, 26, for his alleged involvement in a shooting on Nov. 21 at 3400 Cavalcade Street, which resulted in two people getting injured.

The vapor intrusion process in the Fifth Ward community should be completed by Spring 2024, according to Union Pacific.

The funding will help relocate residents from the Fifth Ward cancer cluster, following years of community advocacy. Residents demand more accountability from Union Pacific Railroad.

Union Pacific Railroad has announced they will be coming to select homes near the former Houston Wood Preserving Works site to collect soil samples.

A Union Pacific spokesperson said these recent state findings were given to the Houston Health Department in January 2023, but were never released to the public. Residents say it doesn't change the company's responsibilities to the community.

Another Fifth Ward resident, who was living in the area of where a cancer cluster was identified by the state, died of cancer two weeks ago.

One Houston resident, who health issues are making things hard for him, has been living without air conditioning for the last two months.

The City of Houston has announced help is on the way to help relocate citizens living near a cancer cluster.

New affordable housing units are coming to the Fifth Ward area for artists to uphold and preserve the art community.

Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting in Fifth Ward, where at least three people were injured.

"My goal was to connect them to experts, so they could help them understand the technicalities surrounding some of the actions that will be taken by the Environmental Protection Agency, the City of Houston, and others," Council Member Letitia Plummer said in a press statement.

Details are limited, but authorities said the shooting occurred at 3200 Noble at Brewster, just before 8 p.m.

Residents of Fifth Ward, a state-identified cancer cluster, expressed gratitude for a three-day cancer summit with city leaders but still demand action against the cancer-causing chemicals found in the predominantly Black community.

"Our goal is to foster dialogue, build relationships, and inspire concrete actions that can make a real difference in the lives of the people of the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities," Councilmember Letitia Plummer said.
