Monitoring bacteria along Texas beaches

While most bacteria found in Gulf waters is not harmful to humans, there are still a couple of types of bacteria to look out for if you do plan to hit the beach.

Texas City Fire Relief

Andre and Raechelle Simon lost everything, including their cars, when their Texas City rent home was destroyed by fire. Community members quickly jumped in to help. They and their three children are now trying to find a place to live so they can start rebuilding their lives.

Galveston, birthplace of Juneteenth

It was on Galveston Island 155 years ago that General Order #3 enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation was read aloud, letting the slaves of Texas know that they were now free. The Civil War had ended in May, and it was time for slave holders to let go. Photojournalist Darlene Janik Faires shares the island's significance on this day.
