FOX 26 Meteorologist Allison Gargaro has a tropical update for Friday. We are also watching an area of low pressure in the southern Gulf. Invest 98 has gotten stronger, and the National Hurricane Center has upgraded its chance of becoming a very brief tropical depression to 50%. The center of the system is likely to move inland near the northeastern Mexico coast later today, bringing some rain to Texas.

There is a FOX 26 Storm Alert for Friday as tropical moisture arrives today and tomorrow. The entire Texas coast is at some risk for some isolated flash flooding so expect some rounds of heavy rain Friday afternoon.

Things are getting interesting. A area of low pressure in the southern Gulf seems to be getting a bit stronger this afternoon and the hurricane center has upgraded its chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm to 50%. The center of the system is likely to head toward the Rio Grande in deep south Texas, but I think we'll have a good chance for storms, with a few heavy ones both Friday and Saturday. Flooding will be more probable in South Texas, but just stay weather aware over the next day or two for changes.

As back to school week continues, we will be on the lookout for storms to pop up after about 2pm and through about 7pm. Away from rain, expect typical August muggy air with highs in the mid 90s and a heat index above 100.

Tropics remain active with tropical storm Erin now in the Central Atlantic. It is expected to become a category one hurricane by Friday morning and a major category 3 hurricane by Sunday morning, just north of Puerto Rico. Right now, It appears that it will curve north early next week and miss the East Coast of the US. But it could pose a risk for Bermuda next week. We are also monitoring a tropical wave crossing over the Yucatan peninsula that will push into the Southwestern Gulf by Thursday. There's a low 10 to 20% chance that it could turn into a weak tropical system over the next few days. At this point, it is expected to remain weak and have minimal impacts on the Houston area. However, it could help to enhance our rain chances Friday and give us an increased risk for rip currents.
