Look for scattered showers and storms across Southeast Texas to end the holiday weekend. Houston needs the rain so there won't be too many complaints if it rains on Labor Day. The forecast returns to the normal hot and dry for the end of the work week.

Tropical Weather Forecast - September 2, 2023

The National Hurricane Center is done with Idalia but they still have Gert and Katia to watch in the Atlantic. We are mostly concerned with an area that hasn't formed yet but looks like it will be the next named storm.

Today looks to be the warmest and driest of the long holiday weekend locally. Scattered showers and storms are possible through Tuesday keeping temperatures mostly in the 90s. No day looks to be a washout but hopefully you luck out! In the tropics, a new wave bears watching long term.

Tropical Weather Forecast - Sept. 1, 2023

Tropics remain super active as we get closer to the peak of hurricane season which is September 10th. Six systems, including four named systems are being monitored in the Atlantic. Fortunately, none of these system appear to threaten SE TX or the US anytime soon. Post Tropical Cyclone Idalia may bring tropical storm conditions to Bermuda this weekend as it regains tropical storm status. Hurricane Franklin should lose tropical characteristics as it moves into colder waters of the north Atlantic. Tropical Storm Jose should be absorbed by Franklin soon and fall apart. Tropical depression Gert has reformed in the central Atlantic after being a tropical storm several days ago. It is no threat to land at this time. Tropical depression #12 has formed in the far east Atlantic and could become Katia this weekend. Another tropical wave is expected to roll off of the west coast of Africa the next few days and has a medium chance for development.

FOX 26 Friday afternoon weather forecast

Hazy skies today around Houston because of excessive ozone and light wildfire smoke lingering into Southeast Texas. Friday looks to be sunny and dry but the rest of the holiday weekend could see some showers and isolated storms. If you are spending time outdoors Sunday and Monday be ready for some afternoon rain and a few brief heavy downpours. The tropics are very active with 6 areas in the Atlantic being closely monitored by the National Hurricane Center. Nothing expected to impact Texas at this time.

FOX 26 Friday morning weather forecast

Our air quality continues to be moderately impacted by ozone production and light wildfire smoke filtering into the area from other regions. Otherwise, sunny dry and quiet for those getting a head start on Labor Day festivities! If you're spending the long weekend locally, scattered showers and storms will be in the mix mainly on Sunday and Monday. In the tropics, all storms are out to sea and moving away from the U.S. with Idalia now post-tropical. 3 additional areas are being monitored by the NHC for potential development over time.

FOX 26 Houston Weather Forecast

Idalia has lost tropical characteristics and is now a post-tropical cyclone in the western Atlantic. It could bring some stronger winds and rain to Bermuda this weekend where a tropical storm watch is in effect. Locally, we remain hot but with low humidity and no rain expected. Air quality alert for higher ozone levels has been extended through Friday for Houston and Galveston. Pattern will start changing for the holiday weekend as more humidity and rain chances return. Look for isolated rain Saturday but more spotty to scattered showers and storms may impact your holiday weekend plans Sunday and Monday. Temperatures next week are not as hot as recent days but will still remain above average.

Idalia has dumped 5-10" of rain over parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas but now has become a Post-Tropical Cyclone as it moves into the western Atlantic. Idalia will still pose a threat to Bermuda this weekend where Tropical Storm watches are now in place. Hurricane Franklin is moving away from Bermuda to the NE and should gradually weaken as it pushes into cooler waters. Tropical Storm Jose is expected to get absorbed into hurricane Franklin and the remnants of Gert are drifting north over the next few days with only a low chance for development. Another tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic now has a high chance to become a tropical system. The next name on the list would be Katia.
