Death of George Floyd

In the two weeks since George Floyd’s killing, police departments have banned chokeholds, Confederate monuments have fallen and officers have been arrested and charged.

People gathered on Monday, June 8 to pay their respects to Floyd in Houston, Texas.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin made his first court appearance Monday in the death of George Floyd, where a judge set his bail at $1.25 million with no conditions. Chauvin, a veteran police officer, was seen putting his knee on the back of Floyd’s neck’s as he repeatedly said he could not breathe. 

A 64-year-old woman and licensed attorney was arrested for the second time in two days after a video was published on Facebook which showed her spitting on a black teenager during an anti-racism protest in Milwaukee.

Congressional Democrats unveiled legislation Monday to overhaul police accountability.

As the doors opened at The Fountain of Praise church in Houston, where Floyd spent most of his life, Floyd was lying in an open gold-colored casket, dressed in a brown suit. His body was escorted to what organizers say will be a six-hour public viewing that was expected to draw thousands of mourners.

Black Americans are far more likely to die of COVID-19 and to work in low-paying service jobs — the ones slashed when restaurants and movie theaters closed as a health precaution.

In San Francisco, public defenders will also lie down or take a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds - to commemorate the amount of time a Minneapolis police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck, killing him.
