Americans worried about coronavirus don't need to buy face masks, US surgeon general says

The U.S. Surgeon General pleaded with the public over the weekend to stop buying masks, stating that they won’t protect the wearer from catching the virus and it makes mask scarce for medical professionals who actually need them.

The new virus is a member of the coronavirus family and is a close cousin to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past. It can cause fever, coughing, wheezing and pneumonia.
