Police: Officers fatally shoot man who opened fire on crowd, killing 15-year-old boy

Police in Kensington shot and killed a suspect who they say fired a gun into a crowd of people early Friday morning, killing a 15-year-old and injuring another teen.

Officers were called to the 3300 block of Emerald Street around 12:30 a.m. for reports of a fight on the street. 

While officers were trying to break up the altercation, police say more people emerged from a home and formed a large crowd on the sidewalk and street. Members of the crowd became violent, according to police, causing 43-year-old Jesus Perez to pull a gun from his waistband and fire into the crowd.

Police say 15-year-old Jeremy Perez and a 17-year-old boy were struck by gunfire. Two Philadelphia police officers opened fire on the suspect, striking him in the torso.

Jesus and Jeremy Perez were pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital. The 17-year-old victim is in stable condition, according to police.

Police say the suspect's weapon, a .9mm Smith & Wesson, was stolen out of Virginia.  

The officers have been identified as 39-year-old Officer Timothy Strano, a six-year veteran, and 45-year-old Officer Leggie Thompson, a nine-month veteran of the department. 

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner says he wants to hold off on releasing police bodycam footage until they receive input from the family on what images or footage if any can be released publicly.

"I have relayed a request to Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw that body-worn camera (BWC) footage and other video or photo evidence related to the OIS investigation not be released until we have received input from the families of the deceased and the survivor on what, if any, images or footage can be released publicly," Krasner said in a statement.

The investigation is still active and ongoing.
