Tropical weather update - October 31, 2025

Hurricane Melissa brushed by Bermuda last night and this morning with a wind gust around 98 miles per hour reported. As of this afternoon, Melissa has lost tropical characteristics and is no longer a tropical system. However, it remains a powerful storm with very strong winds and is expected to bring some brief heavy rain to parts of Newfoundland tonight. No other systems are being monitored for tropical development in the Atlantic basin at this time. Hurricane season lasts for another month, ending on November 30th.

Tropical weather update - October 30, 2025

Hurricane Melissa, after causing widespread catastrophic damage in Jamaica and Cuba, is now a Category 2 hurricane moving away from the Bahamas and racing toward the North Atlantic. The storm is forecast to pass just to the west of Bermuda this evening & tonight. Melissa poses no threat to the US mainland and will become "post-tropical" over the weekend as it moves over cooler waters. There are no other areas of concern in the Atlantic basin for development at this time. But keep in mind that hurricane season will continue for about another month. So stay alert.

Hurricane Melissa, which made a historic, catastrophic landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, hit Cuba Wednesday morning as a major hurricane. The storm is moving northeast and will continue across the southeastern Bahamas before approaching Bermuda later this week. No direct impacts expected for the US mainland.

Hurricane Melissa remains an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane and its core is slamming Jamaica today. Winds increased to a whopping 185 mph late morning just before landfall around noon near New Hope, Jamaica. Jamaica is dealing with catastrophic and life-threatening conditions, including destructive winds, storm surge and rainfall totals of 15 to 30 inches, which will lead to widespread flash flooding and possible landslides through early Wednesday. Based on wind speed, Hurricane Melissa is tied for the second strongest hurricane ever in the Atlantic basin.

Melissa is now a dangerous category 5 major hurricane. Melissa is expected to make landfall in Jamaica early tomorrow morning as a category 5, something no hurricane has done in Jamaican history. The slow movement of this storm will cause flooding to Jamaica along with days of prolonged winds. Jamaica could be in for catastrophic flooding with up to 3 feet of rain and storm surge up to 13 feet east of the center at landfall. Melissa is then expected to roll over eastern Cuba late Tuesday into early Wednesday, still maintaining that major hurricane status. Then it will quickly move over the Southeastern Bahamas Wednesday before reaching Bermuda likely by Friday. Hurricane Melissa is no threat to the United States.

The slow movement of this storm will cause flooding to Jamaica before the very high winds slam the island early this week. Jamaica could be in for catastrophic flooding with up to 3 feet of rain and storm surge up to 13 feet east of the center at landfall. Melissa is then expected to roll over eastern Cuba late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Then it will quickly move over the Southeastern Bahamas Wednesday before reaching Bermuda likely by Friday.

Melissa is now a hurricane and forecast to become a major hurricane in the next 24 hours. The slow movement of this storm will cause flooding to Jamaica before the very highs winds slam the island early this week. Jamaica could be in for 48 hours of hurricane force winds, which is rare. The storm will move quickly into the Atlantic Ocean with no impact on the Gulf Coast.

Tropical weather update - October 24, 2025

Tropical Storm Melissa is still spinning in the central Caribbean and is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane over the weekend. The threat for strong winds and heavy rain will be felt across Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Eastern Cuba. It looks like the biggest impacts could come in Jamaica where a direct hit from Melissa is expected early next week on Monday and Tuesday. Over a foot of rain and hurricane force winds are likely as Melissa is expected to slam into Jamaica early next week as a powerful category four hurricane.
