Former Uvalde CISD officer Adrian Gonzales will walk into court Monday morning as the start of week two begins. He is being charged with 29 counts of abandoning or endangering a child. Prosecutors say he didn't act quickly enough during the 2022 massacre, where 19 students and two teachers were killed.

Teacher Arnulfo Reyes testified that his students followed their training during the shooting, while also clarifying that the door magnets used by teachers did not play a role in the gunman’s ability to enter his classroom. During cross-examination, the defense focused on security lapses, noting that external and internal doors were often left unlocked because substitute teachers were not provided with keys. The defense also challenged Reyes' consistency by comparing his current testimony about the initial sounds of the shooting to his previous statements during the grand jury proceedings.

During testimony in the trial of former officer Adrian Gonzales, former teacher Elsa Avila recounted how her fourth-grade students used their active shooter training to remain quiet and comfort her after she was shot in her classroom. Another teacher, Erin Robin, testified to seeing an unidentified officer standing by a school district vehicle during the attack, positioned between her classroom and the ongoing gunfire. The defense used Robin’s sighting to suggest that Gonzales was positioned in a defensive spot between the teacher and the shooter during the massacre.

Reyes described gruesome testimony describing that the shooter shot at him, striking him in the arm. That gunman then came back into his classroom and taunted Reyes, before shooting him again in the back.
