The tragic deaths of eight children in Shreveport, Louisiana, were the latest in the line of mass killings across the United States. Less than four months into 2026, there have already been seven shootings in which four or more people were killed, new data from the Gun Violence Archive showed.

Why you should care:

In 2024, then-U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy declared gun violence a public health crisis, citing the fast-growing number of injuries and deaths involving firearms in the U.S. At the time, he called for several measures, including a ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines for civilian use, universal background checks, and laws that restrict firearm use in public spaces.

By the numbers:

Thirty-six people have died in the seven shootings so far in 2026, the Gun Violence Archive data showed. In four cases, the suspect was killed, while in two of them an individual was taken into custody. See list of mass killings so far.
