Idalia weakens to post-tropical storm after carving deadly path of destruction from Florida to Carolinas

Authorities have attributed at least three deaths to Idalia -- two in Florida and one in Georgia. The storm is forecast to move away from North Carolina on Thursday while dumping heavy rain on coastal areas of the state.

Idalia has lost tropical characteristics and is now a post-tropical cyclone in the western Atlantic. It could bring some stronger winds and rain to Bermuda this weekend where a tropical storm watch is in effect. Locally, we remain hot but with low humidity and no rain expected. Air quality alert for higher ozone levels has been extended through Friday for Houston and Galveston. Pattern will start changing for the holiday weekend as more humidity and rain chances return. Look for isolated rain Saturday but more spotty to scattered showers and storms may impact your holiday weekend plans Sunday and Monday. Temperatures next week are not as hot as recent days but will still remain above average.

Idalia has dumped 5-10" of rain over parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas but now has become a Post-Tropical Cyclone as it moves into the western Atlantic. Idalia will still pose a threat to Bermuda this weekend where Tropical Storm watches are now in place. Hurricane Franklin is moving away from Bermuda to the NE and should gradually weaken as it pushes into cooler waters. Tropical Storm Jose is expected to get absorbed into hurricane Franklin and the remnants of Gert are drifting north over the next few days with only a low chance for development. Another tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic now has a high chance to become a tropical system. The next name on the list would be Katia.

Sunshine and relatively dry air will allow for triple-digit highs today and tomorrow with our overnights feeling fairly pleasant. Isolated showers and a few storms are possible for the Labor Day holiday weekend, but highs will still be above average in the mid to upper 90s.

The deadly Category 3 hurricane hit along the coast of the Florida Big Bend near Keaton Beach about 7:45 a.m. local time, posing an immediate threat to lives and properties with 125 mph winds and significant flooding.

Hurricane Idalia made landfall as a strong Category 3 hurricane with 125 mph winds this morning near Keaton Beach, Florida. Idalia has been downgraded to a tropical storm but still poses a storm surge, flooding, strong wind and tornado threat for parts of Georgia and the Carolinas. Idalia should push into the western Atlantic by Friday and get close to Bermuda this weekend as it slowly weakens. Hurricane Franklin is passing NW of Bermuda today with tropical storm force winds possible for the Bermuda area. Tropical Depression #11 and the remnants of Gert are in the central Atlantic but should fall apart over the next few days. Invest 94-L in the eastern Atlantic has a medium chance for development over the next several days.
