Tropical Weather Update - September 4, 2023

Tropics remain active but a few systems are falling apart. Katia has become post-tropical & should fall apart soon. Remnants of Gert are on their last leg as well. But Invest 95-L is getting stronger & will likely be a tropical Depression or storm soon. Another strong tropical wave is coming off the coast of Africa with a medium chance for tropical cyclone development.

Expect a hot, humid Labor Day with a good chance for scattered storms, so keep an eye on your FOX 26 weather app. A few more storms are possible tomorrow, then back to the triple digits for highs by late this week.

Scattered showers and storms should make a quick return to Southeast Texas for the start of the week. If you are doing a BBQ for Labor Day, please use extreme caution. The drought has left vegetation dangerously dry. The rain chances should also give Houston a break from the triple digits but more hot and dry days return for the end of the week.

Our air quality continues to be impacted by wildfire smoke and ozone, so expect hazy sunshine today with a few isolated storms. Better rain chances and a slight cool down arrive tomorrow, and Tuesday so you may have to dodge some rain drops for outdoor Labor Day plans. Remember if thunder roars go indoors! We dry out and warm up again heading into next weekend.

President Biden visits Florida after Idalia

President Biden is in Florida as the state recovers from it's direct hit by Hurricane Idalia in some of the state's most vulnerable communities. FOX Weather's Katie Byrne has more on the story.

The National Hurricane Center is done with Idalia but they still have Gert and Katia to watch in the Atlantic. We are mostly concerned with an area that hasn't formed yet but looks like it will be the next named storm.

Today looks to be the warmest and driest of the long holiday weekend locally. Scattered showers and storms are possible through Tuesday keeping temperatures mostly in the 90s. No day looks to be a washout but hopefully you luck out! In the tropics, a new wave bears watching long term.

Changes are rolling in for our Labor Day Holiday Weekend with more humidity and increasing rain chances. Air Quality Alert for higher ozone levels will also remain in place through Saturday evening. There's a slim shot for an isolated shower near the coast through this evening. But most of us will have to wait until Saturday and Sunday to get some of that rain. Rain chances go from 20% Saturday to 40% Sunday to 60% for Labor Day on Monday. Temperatures are gradually less hot through the next few days with more clouds and rain around.
