Tropical Weather update - October 5, 2025
A broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions appear conducive for additional development of this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form this week as it moves quickly across the central tropical Atlantic, approaching portions of the Leeward Islands later this week.

Tropical Weather update - October 4, 2025
A weak area of low pressure located over the north-central Gulf is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms off the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. This system is expected to move slowly northwestward during the next day or two, reaching the coast of Texas by Monday. Development of this system is not expected due to strong upper-level winds. In the Atlantic, recent satellite-derived wind data indicate that a broad area of low pressure, associated with a tropical wave, has formed several hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system, and it could become a tropical depression next week while moving across the central tropical Atlantic.

There are couple of spots near the Gulf that have a small chance for development. First, the NHC has highlighted some lingering storms over Florida as having about a 10% chance to become a depression or storm. There is a jet stream disturbance that has sparked rain south of New Orleans. Chances look low for an organized tropical system, but it's not impossible. We'll look for some scattered showers locally tied in with that system by Monday. Elsewhere in the distant Atlantic, there will likely be a depression or storm forming next week, but it's thousands of miles away and the long-term path is uncertain. The next two names on the list for tropical systems are Jerry and Karen.

Tropical Weather Update - October 2, 2025
Imelda is no longer a hurricane but is still a large and powerful storm in the central atlantic. It brought heavy rain and strong winds to Bermuda this morning, but is racing away and will gradually weaken as it eventually makes its way to London. However, we can't let our guard down because there are now two new areas to watch in the Atlantic basin. One tropical wave coming off the West Coast of Africa has a low chance for slow development over the next week as it moves west. Another tropical wave near south Florida has a very low chance to develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next week as it pushes into the Gulf. If the system develops, it could spread a few more downpours into Southeast Texas. However, significant impacts are unlikely

Tropical Weather Forecast - Hurricane Imelda headed toward Bermuda Wednesday night
Hurricane Humberto has merged with a cold front today. So while it will still have hurricane force winds, it won't be a tropical system anymore - it is not making a direct impact on land. Hurricane Imelda is moving away from the U.S. East Coast and headed toward Bermuda tonight. There are no other short-term threats from the tropics. In the Gulf, it's not impossible for a weak are of low pressure to form over the next few days or so in the southern Gulf. Some related showers could move toward Texas, but for now it does not look like a big concern.

Tracking Tropical Storm Imelda, Hurricane Humberto
Two tropical systems (with familiar names) are very close to each other east of Florida. Hurricane Humberto has been as major status since Friday and should remain at least a category 3 through Monday night. It will not threaten the U.S., other than helping to generate large waves. At the same time, Tropical Storm Imelda could get better organized slowly today and is not expected to make a landfall, but will bring rough waves and rain to coastal areas from Florida to South Carolina. Bother systems will likely move away from the U.S. over the next two to three days. Imelda could roll right over Bermuda by late Wednesday and Thursday. If these names sound familiar, six years ago, another Tropical Storm Imelda drenched the Houston area, especially east of Houston with several feet of rain - this caused flooding worse than Harvey in Chambers County. Hurricane Humberto was a noteworthy storm in the Gulf in 2007 when it went from a tropical depression in the morning to landfall in Port Arthur as a category 1 hurricane that night!

Gabrielle has become Post-Tropical but is still expected to bring near hurricane-force winds to the Azores islands tonight and Friday. Gabrielle could also bring some wind and rain to far away places like Portugal and even northern Morocco! Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Humberto will gain strength as it moves in between the East Coast and Bermuda. On top of that, another tropical storm could form very close to Humberto near Puerto Rico. That system could be a threat anywhere from Florida to the Carolinas.

Hurricane Gabrielle has become a textbook, intense major hurricane in the Atlantic - it is not affecting land, so is just a sight to behold. Elsewhere, two tropical waves, Invest 94L & 93L, are very close together east of the Caribbean and both pose a slight risk to the East Coast of the US with no threat to Texas. In Asia, Typhoon Ragasa will pass just south of Hong Kong with 140mph winds, so the southern coast of China is bracing for high winds and very large waves.

Elsewhere, we're watching two tropical waves in the Atlantic and both have a decent chance to become tropical storms this week. They are both very far from Texas and look like a concern for the East Coast from Florida to North Carolina by this weekend.

Things are getting complicated in the Atlantic. Gabrielle has now been upgraded to a hurricane. This system should continue to strengthen over the next several days possibly becoming a major hurricane by midweek. The National Hurricane Center is also keeping watch on two other areas for possible development into a tropical cyclone. One tropical wave has a 50% chance to become a tropical cyclone in the next 7 days and the other area has a 20% chance.
