Your pet's food bowl could be making you sick, report says

Feeding your four-legged friend could be the reason you're feeling under the weather.

Your pet's food bowl is prime breeding grounds for bacteria, mold, and yeast, according to a new report.

A National Science Foundation study finds that pet dishes are the fourth germiest place in most homes. Your kitchen sponge or dish rag, the kitchen sink, and toothbrush holders took the top three spots, respectively.

Dry pet foods leave residue behind which can result in bacteria like e-coli and salmonella living in food bowls. Such germs can cause both animals and humans to fall ill. Experts say pet dishes should be washed and sanitized daily.
