WATCH: Video shows Artemis II launch from airplane

A passenger aboard a commercial flight captured a rare view of NASA’s Artemis II launch from the sky as the spacecraft lifted off from Florida on April 1. 

The video shows the rocket’s contrail stretching across the horizon during the historic mission to send astronauts around the Moon.

What we know:

A passenger on a flight from Florida to North Carolina filmed the launch of NASA’s Artemis II mission while in the air on Wednesday, April 1.

Footage captured by Jason Issertell shows the contrail from the launch visible in the sky from the airplane.

NASA’s Artemis II mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending four astronauts around the Moon for the first time since 1972.

The crew includes three Americans and one Canadian, and the mission is expected to last 10 days.

Issertell described witnessing the launch as a "wonderful moment of hope amidst all the chaos of the world."

"Memorable to say the least," he added.

NASA said, "Their goal is to verify modern human capabilities in deep space and pave the way for long-term exploration and science on the lunar surface."
