UH baseball coach Todd Whitting now highest paid in conference
University of Houston baseball coach Todd Whitting, who led the Cougars to a school-record 91 wins over the last two seasons, has received a $50,000 annual raise.
On Whitting's watch UH won the American Athletic Conference Post-Season Tournament title in 2014 and he won the conference's regular season championship in 2015.
"By my research that $50,000 bump makes him the highest-paid (baseball) coach in the American Athletic Conference, which is where he deserves to be paid," said Hunter Yurachek, vice president of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Houston.
"I legitimately think baseball is a sport we can win a national championship in, and I think Todd Whitting is the person to lead us to that national championship. I think he's proven that. The program has grown under his leadership over the last five years."
Yurachek said he has also added new incentives to Whitting's contract for making the super regional and College World Series.
Whitting signed a new five-year contract last year that included a provision that would automatically add a year to his deal if the Cougars made the NCAA regionals, which they did as hosts in 2015.
"He got a bonus year already for reaching the regionals," Yurachek said. "So he's got five still."
