Study: Not drinking alcohol for 1 month can have major health benefits

The medical community is abuzz with talk of a new study that shows how abstaining from drinking can not only prevent liver damage, but help the organ heal.

Giving up alcohol for even just a month improves liver function, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, doctors say.

It also helps lower the risk of cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

“It’s amazing. The body can heal,” said Dr. Marty Makary, a physician and professor of public health at Johns Hopkins University.

The health risks associated with alcohol consumption are no secret, he told Jon Scott on "Happening Now."

But what most don’t realize is how much sugar is contained in drinks like beer and wine.
