Houston restaurant owner shoots robbery suspect

Shooting in northeast Houston on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017

Police say a restaurant owner shot and killed one of two robbery suspects in northeast Houston.

The owner was leaving Jeff's Kitchen on Mesa Road near Richland Drive after closing the building for the night on Saturday when two men jumped out from behind a garbage bin and tried to rob him as he was walking toward his vehicle.

The store owner, identified only as a man in his 70s, told police that he had been robbed before after leaving for the night, so he was carrying a gun. He shot at both men.

One of the men was wounded in the throat and chest and died later at Memorial Hermann Hospital. His identity will be verified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The second robber ran away from the restaurant.

The store owner, who was not injured, will not likely be facing any charges, although the case will be referred to a grand jury.

Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division by phone at 713-308-3600.
