Alief mom protests unauthorized immunization of 11-year-old son

ALIEF (FOX 26) - It is a fundamental covenant. When parents send their kids to Texas schools they trust educators to protect their safety.

A mother whose son attends Alief ISD's Miller Intermediate says that faith was badly broken
when her child was immunized without her consent.

"On January 21st he received three vaccines without my consent," said the mother whose identity Fox 26 has agreed to conceal to protect her son's privacy.

The immunizations, confirmed on shot records, were delivered by personnel from Care Van, an affiliate of the Caring For Children Foundation of Texas and a longtime Alief ISD partner.

The parent says she's particularly upset that her son was instructed to answer health questions on the pre-immunization questionnaire.

"I get home and my son my 11-year-old tells me they set him down and had him fill them out," said the mother.

And it gets worse. Among the trio of immunizations delivered was the HPV vaccine, an inoculation against a sexually transmitted virus the boy's parents, like many others, were not yet ready to put in his system.

"They just stripped my parental rights in that situation and just gave it to him," said the mother.

Alief ISD has confirmed the unauthorized immunization and has launched an internal investigation.
Fox 26 legal analyst Chris Tritico calls the incident an egregious violation.

"I don't know how many times this has happened. One is too many, but I venture to guess it's a lot more. Anyone who inoculates children without parental consent should never be allowed to do this in Texas again,"  said Tritico.

For its part, the Caring For Children Foundation tells Fox 26 "it has never experienced this problem in Alief before" and says "it is working very closely with the district to discern the facts in this case."

Whatever the finding, they will fall short of repairing what this parent says has been taken.

"I lost complete trust. I don't want this to happen to any other parent," says the Mother who reports no negative health impact from the school immunization which replicated two shots received from her son's pediatrician.
