An Excessive Heat Warning is in place for the majority of the FOX26 viewing area through 10PM Friday night, with a Heat Advisory through the same time for southwest counties. Gusty winds are creating rip current concerns at the coast, and driving up fire danger in particular for the Brazos Valley where a Red Flag Warning is in effect. Keep heat, beach and fire safety top of mind while outdoors. The Atlantic remains dusty, and quiet with no development expected over the next week.

Tropical Weather Forecast - August 9, 2023

All is quiet in the Tropical Atlantic with no tropical cyclones expected to form over the next few days. Three areas are being monitored for possible development in the eastern Pacific. Hurricane Dora is still going strong, now SW of Hawaii. But the pressure change between Dora south of Hawaii and high-pressure north of Hawaii contributed to strong winds that helped fuel massive wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of Maui today.

Excessive Heat Warning has been extended until 7PM Thursday for N. Liberty, Walker, San Jacinto, Polk, Washington, & Grimes counties. Heat Advisory has been extended until 7 PM Thursday for Houston and all other areas. Heat index values could still be around 108 or higher with temperatures near 105 north of Houston and around 100 - 103 in Houston. This pattern sticks around for at least the next week with no major rain chance in sight. In fact, only a 10-20% chance for rain returns by the weekend and next week. Hot and mainly dry weather continues to increase our wildfire danger and drought conditions. Red flag warnings are in place for Washington, Grimes, Colorado & Austin counties for high fire danger. Most SE Texas counties are under a burn ban so avoid any outdoor burning.

Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories in place for Wednesday but those heat alerts will be extended as the forecast remains very hot. Drought and fire weather conditions are also getting worse and more FOX 26 counties are under an outdoor burn ban. Rain chances increase slightly towards the end of the weekend and into next week.

Dozens of states hit by severe storms

Cleanup efforts are underway across nearly a dozen states after severe storms slammed the United States early this week. FOX's Bryan Llenas has more on the damage along with another round of rain that's been causing flooding Tuesday.

Excessive Heat Warning has been extended until 9 PM Wednesday for N. Liberty, Walker, San Jacinto, Polk, Washington, & Grimes counties. Heat Advisory has been extended until 9 PM Wednesday for Houston and areas south. Dangerous temperatures of 100+ and heat index values of 108+ are likely during this time. Drought and fire weather conditions are also getting worse with Grimes, Washington, Austin & Colorado counties going under a Fire Weather Warning. Unincorporated Harris County is also now under a Burn Ban. So make sure to avoid any outdoor burning. Rain chances improve slightly this weekend and early next week, but not much. Triple digit temperatures will stick around for at least the next week.

Tropical Weather Forecast - August 8, 2023

Things are still quiet across the Atlantic Basin with no tropical cyclones expected to develop over the next few days. Dora remains a powerful hurricane in the central Pacific well south of Hawaii but is expected to remain over water. Saharan dust is still present across much of the Atlantic limiting tropical development. But as this dust goes away over the coming weeks, very warm water temperatures could mean an uptick in tropical activity...stay tuned.
