It's been 23 days straight of triple digit heat but things are about to change...at least for one day! Tropical Depression Nine has popped up in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to become Tropical Storm Harold either tonight or early Tuesday. It should make landfall in south Texas south of Corpus Christi Tuesday morning. So most of the rain and stronger wind should stay away from Houston. But spotty downpours and a few strong storms are still possible during the day Tuesday. Greatest impacts will be felt around coastal areas of Matagorda & Jackson counties where a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect. There will be a higher rip current risk and small craft advisory in place for coastal areas as this tropical system brushes by. It's back to triple digit heat for the rest of the week and little to no rain with record heat likely by Thursday.

A developing low in the Gulf of Mexico will head toward South Texas through Tuesday, but the Houston area will be close enough to see some rain. Isolated late-day storms are possible today, then a better chance for showers and a few storms tomorrow. We'll quickly pivot back to very hot air Wednesday through the weekend, but with isolated PM storms possible.

Sunday was the hottest day of the year in Houston. More heat alerts are coming this week with a short break from the triple digits on Tuesday. Not everyone will see rain but it is the highest widespread chances we have seen for a while. The extra clouds should lead to slightly cooler temperatures for one day.

Saturday was HOT across the Houston area and Sunday will be even hotter. Fire dangers continue for inland counties as well as the Excessive Heat Warning. Southeast Texas could still see some showers on Tuesday but the majority of the rain from a tropical wave in the Gulf will slide to the south towards northern Mexico. The blazing heat returns for the end of the week and into next weekend.

An absolute scorcher of a weekend with fire dangers inland and an Excessive Heat Warning for most through Sunday night. Trends continue to be that the majority of the rain that we will see on Tuesday looks to be focused mostly south. Past that, while isolated showers are possible each day blazing heat looks to return.

The heat alerts continue for the Houston area with Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories. There is also an Air Quality Alert and Fire Weather Watch for parts of the FOX26 area. There are still lots of questions for the forecast next week but things certainly favor a slightly cooler and rainy pattern for most of the week. But first, be ready for another dangerously hot weekend.

Houston weather: Heat wave continuing through the weekend

Following our 18th straight day of triple-digit heat, we should continue that trend Thursday through the weekend.

FOX 26 Wednesday evening weather forecast

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect through this evening with slightly drier, less humid air in place. Tomorrow look for the return of more widespread heat alerts, with several sunny and hot days on the horizon. The tropics are starting to wake up, and there is at least the potential for some tropical moisture to bring short-term rain and heat relief early next week. Just something to watch for now, but stay connected and expect changes to the forecast as we draw closer.

A rare Fire Weather Watch is in effect today from noon through 9 p.m. This is due to the combination of the ongoing drought and the temporary arrival of dry air. All local counties are under an outdoor burn ban. Otherwise, look for another very hot pattern today through the weekend with highs above 100. Next week, a tropical wave could bring some rain by the Monday through Wednesday time frame.
