Lawmakers in Austin threw out their opening pitches in an effort to end the deadlock over property tax relief for Texans.

The first 30-day special session in Texas ended without progress as the Republican-controlled House and Senate remain at odds over property tax relief.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law Friday a bill that bars transgender kids from getting puberty blockers and hormone therapies, though the new law could face legal challenges before it takes effect on Sept. 1.

"More must be done for the people of Texas," Abbott said. "Many critical items remain that must be passed. Several special sessions will be required. To ensure that each priority receives the time and attention it deserves to pass into law, only a few will be added each session."

Governor Greg Abbott signed the CROWN Act into law on Saturday. The act will end discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles linked to race.

More than a year since Harris County Deputy Darren Almendarez was gunned down by criminals trying to steal his catalytic converter, a new law has been signed to increase the penalty for thieves.

Abbott himself is a former attorney general, preceding Paxton in the position. The governor has built deep connections in the conservative legal world and is known to lean on former aides for high-profile appointments.

Still on the table are the power grid, property tax relief, school funding, and the budget. With all that "heavy lifting" still to do a great deal of lesser legislation has been left to die.

Shouts from both sides of the school choice and charter school arguments were heard at a church on Broadway Street.
