Warming centers open tonight after new hard freeze warning

One of the most crucial concerns by city leaders is to help Houston's homeless population during this winter blast and to provide warming centers to keep them out of the cold. On Tuesday, a homeless man was found dead behind a dumpster in Southeast Houston due to exposure to the cold. 

Tonight, warming centers are open again because of a hard freeze, and this is not shelter for all individuals who are at risk due to the cold temps and need a warm place to stay tonight

The American Red Cross has opened a Warming Center for individuals who are at risk at the following location will open as a Warming Center from 8:00 p.m. Wednesday - 12 pm Thursday:

South Main Baptist Church

Recreation Center

200 Colquitt Street

Houston, TX 77002

In addition, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2801 Conti Street will be open from 8pm tonight until 8 pm Thursday. 

        Sally’s House (women only), 1717 Congress: This facility will take first 20 women

        Star of Hope (men only), 1811 Ruiz;

        Houston Sobering Center, 150 North Chenevert Street

METRO may provide transportation to individuals who need to access warming centers.  Residents needing transportation can call 3-1-1 (713.837.0311) for transportation.

Due to a natural gas outage in the city of Cleveland, a warming center is being opened at the Cleveland Civic Center beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday. No food or drink will be served and no pets or alcoholic beverages are allowed. The natural gas outage is affecting 1,400 customers. CenterPoint Energy is working to restore natural gas to customers.
