Two deaths confirmed in west Houston shooting

Police are investigating a shooting in a west Houston neighborhood that forced a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. One of the people who was carrying a weapon has died, the other person with the weapon was wounded and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Officers found a body inside a parked vehicle.

The shooting was reported on Wycliffe Drive near Kimberley Lane, one block east of North Wilcrest Drive at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday. A witness told Harris County Precinct 5 deputy constables that a witness found someone with a gunshot wound to the neck at an automotive center on Memorial Drive near Wycliffe Drive and heard shots fired at around 8:45 a.m.

One law enforcement officer was shot in the hand while another officer who was shot is thankful for a bulletproof vest. The Houston Police Department helicopter was shot five times. A nearby Conoco fuel station caught fire after a stray bullet sparked it. Three civilians were injured and taken to hospitals.

The City of Houston Office of Emergency Management had released the following statement on Sunday to prevent nearby residents from encountering the shooter:

The shelter-in-place order was lifted after 1:30 p.m., but as the investigation continues, Memorial Drive is closed near North Wilcrest Drive in both directions. The Katy Freeway frontage road or Briar Forest Drive can be used as alternate routes.
