When asked about the status of the ceasefire, President Donald Trump spoke to reporters Tuesday saying, "For me, I think it’s over," adding negotiations continue but casting doubt on any positive outcome.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's just a waste of time," Trump said. "They can talk, but I think they're wasting their time. They're liars, they're cheats. They're sick people."
Renewed strikes
President Trump's comments came just days after the U.S. launched multiple strikes on Iranian military targets in retaliation for attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command posted to X saying they hit over 80 targets striking air defense systems, command and control networks, radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities and over 60 small boats in and around the strait.
In response, Iran targeted American military sites in the gulf Wednesday after sanctions on their oil sales were reinstated.
Three tankers attacked in Strait of Hormuz
Earlier this week, British military officials said three tankers were hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz.
The attacks come as Iran and the U.S. continue to differ on operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Negotiations between the two nations have been put on hold due to the start of the daylong funeral for Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed by strikes in the first days of the war.
Last month, a memorandum of understanding for a ceasefire was reached to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the two sides negotiated further details on Iran's nuclear program.
"The era of bullying and extortion is over," Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf wrote on X. "It leads nowhere. We don’t fold."
