Police: Man shot, killed by officer in University City section of Charlotte

Conflicting reports between family members and police after a black man was shot and killed by an officer on Tuesday in Charlotte's University City.

The shooting happened in the 9600 block of Old Concord Road.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, at about 3:54 p.m. officers were searching for a suspect with an outstanding warrant at The Village at College Downs, when they saw a man inside a vehicle in the apartment complex. Officers said the man got out of the vehicle holding a gun and then got back inside the vehicle. 

"The subject got back out of the vehicle armed with a firearm and posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject," according to a news release from CMPD.

Officers then immediately requested medic and began performing CPR, police said.

The man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He later died at the hospital.

It's unclear if the person who was shot was the suspect police were looking for.

Authorities have not released the man's name or age.

A man, who identified himself as the victim's brother, tells FOX 46 Charlotte that his brother was just reading a book when officers shot him. According to CMPD, the man was armed.

In a Facebook Live video posted on the FOX 46 Charlotte Facebook page, a woman claiming to be the victim's daughter said that her father was disabled and did not own a gun. She said her father was sitting in the vehicle waiting to pick up a child from the school bus when he was shot multiple times by police.

Detectives said they were able to recover the gun the individual was holding at the time of the shooting and were in the process of interviewing witnesses.

The Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident. Per department protocol, the officer was placed on Administrative Leave.
