Man charged with sexual assault in Amber Alert case

Investigators have charged a 19-year-old man with aggravated sexual assault of a child who was the subject of an Amber Alert.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Child Abuse Unit investigators filed the charge against Kevin Enrique Mejia in connection to an Amber Alert that was issued before 10 a.m. Tuesday by the Texas Center for the Missing on behalf of Katy Independent School District police.

The 13-year-old girl who was the subject of the Amber Alert was reported missing after she was not seen at her school bus stop on Monday.

Investigators say Mejia met the girl a few months earlier on a smartphone app, began talking with her and they exchanged messages. They also say he picked up the girl on Monday morning and drove her to his home near the intersection of Sam Houston Tollway and Town Park Drive in southwest Houston.

HCSO investigators worked together with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to converge on the apartment complex where Mejia lived and arrested him.

The girl was taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Mejia is being held on a $35,000 bond with his first court appearance scheduled at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Harris County Criminal Justice Center 339th Court.
