Kinkaid's Raevyn Rogers wins 800m national title at Oregon

Raevyn Rogers didn't let being a freshman hold her back in her first year running track at Oregon.

"Going into college, I just knew that I didn't want to use me being a freshman as an excuse for anything because we're all on the same level, we're all in college, everyone's talented," Rogers said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

On Saturday, Rogers, who went to Kinkaid High School in Houston, won the national title in the 800-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Oregon's Hayward Field. Her time of 1:59.71 was a new freshman record and she became only the second freshman to ever win the 800-meter title.

"It really hasn't hit me yet," Rogers said. "I still feel like the same Raevyn, but it's such a blessing. God has really worked with me and I am just so blessed to be able to say that I'm a national champion as a freshman."

Rogers' efforts helped in Oregon's sweep of both the men's and women's team events at the championships.

"I was so excited because the last team to win for the women's title was the 1985 team," Rogers said. "And they were at Hayward for their 30th anniversary this weekend. So to be able to win while they were there was really special."

Rogers' freshman year has certainly been memorable. It's also been a very pleasant surprise.

"My coach asked us at the beginning of the year to write down our goals because they're really big on setting the goals on the mirror and looking at it and really trying to reach those goals," Rogers said. "Early in August, I wrote down these goals.

"I wanted to be realistic with myself and I wrote down that I'd win Pac-12 and that I'd be at least top three for NC(AA)'s," she continued. "But I wanted to say I'd win NC(AA)'s, but I had to be realistic, so I was like, 'I'll just do top three for NC(AA)'s.' So really, I prayed that I'd accomplish my goals and for God to really answer my prayers and help me fulfill my goals."

And so Rogers accomplished her goals of being in the top three the best way possible - by finishing number one in the entire country.
