Equine therapy stable in danger of closing

There's a charity in Northeast Houston that teaches kids and adults with disabilities how to ride and care for horses. After operating for many years, the founder says Dream Catcher Stables is now in danger of closing.

Currently 59 people are a part of the program, riding horseback at the stables.

"My goal is to teach these athletes--and we call them athletes--to ride and care for horses to the best of their ability," said Sanna Roling, the founder of Dream Catcher Stables.

Currently 75 percent of the athletes are on the autism spectrum, but anyone with a disability is welcome there, said Roling.

Billie Jean Harris enrolled two of her grandchildren in the program.

"It gives them peace," said Billie Jean Harris, who enrolled two of her grandchildren in the program. "Once you get them on a horse and they start riding, they are a total different child."

The stable's slogan is "Living Life Without Labels."

"The beauty of Dream Catcher Stables is that people with disabilities can come out here, and they're treated like people first," said Roling. "They're not treated like a person with a disability.... If they've had a meltdown, I'll walk over to them and say, 'You ready to ride now?' And they usually are ready."

Harris loved what the program was doing for her grandchildren so much that she joined the board.

Now she's helping Dream Catcher Stables navigate an uncertain future, as the stable on Greens Road won't be home to the ten therapy horses much longer. They've leased this property for 19 years, but now the property has been sold, and they have to move all these horses out by December 1.

"We have nowhere to go," said Roling, adding they'll have to close if they can't fund a move and a new location.

"I have contacted the mayor's office, and hopefully they'll be able to help us, but we have to be prepared if they can't," said Harris.

Dream Catcher Stables is holding a fundraiser Saturday to help afford a new location. They're inviting everyone to attend and show support:
