Dramatic video shows rescue of boy trapped at bottom of pool

New surveillance video shows the dramatic rescue of a boy trapped underwater for nine minutes at a resort pool in South Carolina.

The video shows a 12-year-old boy moments before he became trapped in a pool suction line. The boy is unable to free himself from the line near the bottom of the pool and witnesses on the video are seen responding quickly. They give underwater mouth-to-mouth to him and attempted to free him, as one minute under water becomes two, then four.

Eight minutes later, police officers are seen running to the side of the pool. They plunge in and finally manage to pull the boy to the surface and perform CPR. The video shows the terrifying struggle to save the boy in March. At last check, he was in stable condition at a hospital.

"You just really want to make sure that you stay focused on your kids, that they're not entering the water by themselves," said Tony Guillory, associate director of aquatics at the Greater Houston Area YMCA, warning parents about the potential dangers of pool suction lines.

"I would advise that if you are gonna swim, just stay away from them, because it is a suction device, but it also keeps you safe as well, so you're not supposed to be at the bottom playing around with anything like that," added Guillory.

So far in Texas in 2018, 77 people have drowned, explained Guillory.

May is National Water Safety Month and the YMCA is planning a free swim safety event for children.

"We will teach you certain tools and skills to offer swim safety at the YMCA in order to keep yourself safe in the water," described Guillory. He also said the free classes will be available on May 19 at all Greater Houston Area YMCA locations.
