Fifth Ward residents say after decades of being exposed to cancer-causing chemicals, they won't remain silent any longer
For decades neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have complained about the alarming rate of cancer deaths in the area. The deaths have been traced back to the old Union Pacific rail yard located near the intersection of Liberty Rd and Lockwood Drive. Environmental Protection Agency Chief Michael Regan met with residents and says the federal government is committed to cleaning up the area. He said the Biden administration wants to get this right.
What the EPA calls a Superfund site is any land in the United States that has been contaminated by hazardous waste and identified by the EPA as a candidate for cleanup because it poses a risk to human health and/or the environment. One of these is right here in Fifth Ward.
