Vigil held for Carolina Flores
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Sounds of music, piano tunes and singing filled the Evangelical Garifuna Church of Houston on Friday night, a place where Carolina Flores would come for worship, now a place for those who knew her, to mourn her loss.
Friends say she moved to the United States from Honduras about 3.5 years ago.
"Of course in our country, there isn't much of opportunity for you to give your child a good future so normally most of the people that immigrate from different countries, they have to have a big motivation to do it, in her case, it was her kids", says her church pastor Desman Nunez. "The kids were always happy, she was a hard working person, I use to see her coming from work, at the same time directly to cook, then take care of the kids, it was a big responsibility as like mother", says Gustavo Rochez, a close family friend. Flores was found dead in her apartment Tuesday, her six-week-old baby Shamali Flores had been kidnapped. Since detectives have arrested and charged Erika Miranda-Alvarez with capital murder.
"We were all surprised about the situation and as like the friends we are and family we are, we all still can't believe it", says Rochez.
The pastor says even though he and the congregation are mourning her loss, he says he will be praying for Miranda-Alvarez as well.
"I just want God to have mercy on her", says Pastor Nunez. Erika Miranda-Alvarez was arrested for capital murder and was not given bond. Her next court appearance will be Dec. 27.
