Travis County Sheriff's Office off-duty sergeant killed in suspected burglary

An investigation is underway after a Travis County Sheriff's Office sergeant was killed early Monday morning in Round Rock.

Officials say Sgt. Craig Hutchinson had just gone off duty when he notified dispatch at around 1:20 A.M. that he had prowlers in his yard in the 2000 block of Oak Meadow Drive. Sgt. Hutchinson was requesting Round Rock police to assist him.

When officers arrived just after 1:30 A.M. they found Sgt. Hutchinson near a creek behind his backyard with a gunshot wound. Sgt. Hutchinson was taken to the hospital where he died.

Sgt. Hutchinson, known to his TCSO family as "Hutch", had been with TCSO for 32 years and was set to retire in September.

Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton said in news conference that Sgt. Hutchinson was a "gentle bear" who stood about 6'4" and weighed 270 pounds.

 

 

 

 

Officials have identified the deputy killed as Sgt. Craig Hutchinson. He had 32 years of service and was set to retire in September. 

Sgt. Hutchinson was found shot to death in the backyard of his home off McNeil and East Messick Loop at around 1:30 a.m. Officials say it appeared that some equipment was removed from a shed at the home and that Sgt. Hutchinson was shot by individuals who may have been attempting to burglarize the home.

Several agencies are in the area investigating. Officials shut down I-35 SB temporarily as Sgt. Hutchinson's body was escorted from Round Rock Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, to 15th Street in Austin.
