A dog that was set on fire and left to die in south Florida is on the road to recovery here in central Florida. On Monday the pit bull mix has improved so much that doctors are taking her off her pain medications.

The abused dog named Phoenix was found wandering all alone near Miami. She had surgery, but she needed a foster family to take care of her while she healed. That is when Jaime Jurgensen from Palm Coast stepped in.

"Her temperment is really unbelievable, considering what she's been through," Jurgensen said. "The trauma of that injury alone, I would think would make her completely submissive, scared, timid around people, but her spirit still shined through."

Phoenix may need more surgeries to fix her back in the next few weeks.
