Sheriff: Dog recovering after being choked to point of unconsciousness

Dixie, an 11-pound Yorkshire Terrier, was choked to the point of unconsciousness, according to authorities.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly says Brenden Geary, 21, is behind the brutal attack. He is the dog owner's roommate.  Sheriff Staly said Geary flipped out on the puppy, because Dixie was "acting like a dog."

"The roommate did admit he did beat the dog, because the dog had relieved himself in the home,"  Sheriff Staly said.

The dogs eyes were bloodshot and bruises covered her tiny body when her owner found her on the floor of their Palm Coast home. Dixie spent three nights at the Flagler Animal Hospital.  It's a case that's upsetting to animal lovers, including the sheriff himself.

"I used to own a Yorkie. They are great little dogs, they are loving little dogs, and this is a very sad tragic case."
