Second child allegedly shocked at Houston park
FOX 26 has learned another child was allegedly shocked by a light pole at F.M. Law Park in southeast Houston. FOX 26's Jillian Hartmann explains.
HOUSTON - A family says their 9-year-old son was shocked by the same light pole at F.M. Law Park in southeast Houston just weeks before another child reportedly went into cardiac arrest after touching it.
What we know:
A 14-year-old boy remains hospitalized after authorities say he touched an energized light pole at the park along Vasser Road earlier this week.
Another family is now coming forward claiming their 9-year-old was shocked as well in early April. The family’s attorney, Kim Bruno, said the incident happened during the boy's baseball practice.
"In early April, my client and the family were waiting for the little boy to finish his baseball practice. He came over to this light pole, and he was shocked by it, and the coach came over hysterically running and pulled the boy off," Bruno said. "He sustained injury. He told his mom, ‘I feel like I’m dying. I feel like I’m dying.’ He needed to go to the hospital. He was at the hospital for several hours before he was actually released."
FOX 26 asked the family's attorney if the family reported the incident to the city of Houston.
"The family didn’t actually go to the city, but what they thought they were doing was what they thought was right — making the report to the hospital, letting the hospital know where they were letting the hospital know what had happened, so everything was documented there at the hospital," Bruno said.
Bruno says the family wants to raise awareness to prevent other children from getting hurt.
"I reached out to FOX 26 because I saw this new incident that just happened was kind of the same situation that had happened last month and the community deserves to know what’s going on. This park does not deserve such oversight. It’s unacceptable. Our family plays here. Our kids play here. This is a community park that deserves to be maintained just as well as every other park in our city," Bruno said.
The other side:
FOX 26 reached out to the City of Houston about the second alleged incident.
A spokesperson for the Mayor’s Office said, "Speaking with the Deputy Assistant Director of FMD, there have not been any reports of past incidents regarding F.M. Law Park. Following the notification of the recently reported incident, a maintenance crew was dispatched to assess the area and address any repairs identified during the review. The Department remains committed to maintaining safe and accessible park spaces for the community."
