Mattel's new Hello Barbie stirs controversy

Some are already saying goodbye to Mattel's new Hello Barbie.

The doll has a voice recognition software that, with the help of Wi-Fi, will allow it to engage in conversation with children.

Hello Barbie has an embedded microphone that can record children's voices with a press of a button on the doll. The audio is then transferred to a server where it is processed to push back the doll's responses.

A consumer group is now trying to prevent the doll from hitting store shelves.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) has started a petition asking Mattel to halt production of Hello Barbie saying it is a significant violation of children's privacy.

The CCFC argues that rather than encouraging non-structured creative play, it "ensures that Mattel - not the child - drives the play." Mattel claims the toy will "deepen that relationship girls have with [Barbie]."

Hello Barbie was unveiled in February at Toy Fair 2015 in New York City. Mattel plans to release the doll at $74.99 a pop later this fall.
