SWAT standoff at Katy-area apartment ends with man, woman dead

A man who claimed to have accidentally shot his girlfriend ended up turning the gun on himself after a five-hour SWAT standoff at a Katy-area apartment, authorities say.

The man, 23, and the woman, 20, both died at the scene.

What we know:

The incident began shortly before 2 p.m. when a man called 911 to report that he had accidentally shot his girlfriend, the sheriff’s office says.

SWAT officers and crisis negotiators responded to the scene and tried to get the man to come out for five hours.

The sheriff’s office says gas was deployed in the apartment, prompting the man to go out on his balcony. That’s where, authorities say, he shot himself.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His girlfriend was also found dead in the apartment.

What we don't know:

No one involved in the shooting has been identified.
