Suspect in deadly Houston Fourth Ward shooting turns himself in, police say

A man has turned himself in to Houston police for a deadly shooting that happened in the Fourth Ward, police say. One man was pronounced dead in connection to the shooting and a woman was injured.

The backstory:

The shooting happened at about 1 p.m. Thursday, January 23, near the intersection of Bailey and Ruthven Streets

According to police, Carnell Meeks, 21, and Corey Dontaye James, 20, were arguing about a gaming console. The two then started fighting and other people at the scene tried to break them up.

After the men were separated, James allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting, striking Meeks and a woman who was helping to stop the fight.

Both victims were sent to a hospital where Meeks was pronounced dead. The woman is expected to recover.

An investigation into the shooting led officials to identify Corey James as the suspect. Police say he turned himself in on Monday, January 27, and was booked into the Harris County Jail.

James is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police say.

What we don't know:

The woman who was injured has not been identified. There is also no update on her injury.
