HISD students say they need Thanksgiving week off to do kids stuff

(Fox 26 Houston) - Houston Independent School District students may get an entire week off for Thanksgiving next year. . 

Teachers, parents and community members have been asked to vote online before November 30th.

The district tells says they've asked for the community to decide what to do with Thanksgiving break next year.

Parents and students chimed in, based on the children's responses, it's fair to say if this vote was left up to the more than 215,000 students, they'd vote to give themselves the week off!

Henry Baugh, a first grader at Mark Twain elementary school says he needs the entire Thanksgiving week off to do kids stuff.

"I want to play with my trucks and stuff at home," said Baugh.

His classmate Wyatt Whitley, who's also a first grader, says he had a long day at school and could use the week off next year. 

"Basically if I had the time off I would jump on the trampoline with my brothers and sister."

Henry's mom, Madonna Baugh says she's voting for her kids to have the week off so they can rest.

"They do get worn down, my daughter is actually in the nutcracker this year and it's her second year, so she's tired and worn down from rehearsals so I think the week off is beneficial."

HISD is the seventh largest school district in the country. Jason Spencer, spokesman for district says the decision is in the hands of the community.

"We hear from some parents that (this) would be a plus for them. I can see where some families could say having that Monday and Tuesday off creates a child care issue for us."

Other districts including Fort Bend, Cyfair, Lamar and Klein Forest ISD's have already given their students Thanksgiving week off. Now you don't have to be a parents to vote, you just need to visit the districts website. Voting ends November 30th.
