Grab a bag, it's National Popcorn Day!

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Today is National Popcorn Day!

The popcorn industry is estimated to be worth almost 7.8 billion dollars.

While this isn't breaking news, we realize the value of popcorn in our lives.

According to Wendy Rappel, spokesperson for the Popcorn Board, Americans eat 13 billion quarts of popcorn a year.

"Which is about 41 quarts per person," she said.

The popcorn institute claims most popcorn is eaten at home or on the go.  Bag popcorn is the most popular.

"I think millennials, you see them sort of interested in a lot of ready to eat stuff because they don't want to spend four minutes making popcorn", Rappel said.

Euromonitor predicts ready-to-eat popcorn will fuel much of popcorn's future growth.

As for the popcorn you buy at the movies, it's almost pure profit.  For each dollar you spend on popcorn there, 90 cents goes to the theatre.
