FBI warns of increase in sexual assaults aboard planes

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - It's a crime most of us have probably never even though of -- sexual assaults happening while planes are miles in the air.

But those who specialize in helping sexual assault survivors say they can see why this is taking place.

"There's so many things going on and so many distractions that I think it creates for an easy opportunity to trap an individual," said Aly Jacobs with the Houston Women's Center.

According to the FBI, in fiscal year 2014, 38 cases of in-flight sexual assaults were reported to that federal agency. In the last fiscal year, 63 cases of in flight sexual assaults were reported to the FBI.

Some believe the increase could be due to more reporting and the Me Too movement.

"I think one of the things we see here is increased reporting," Jacobs said. "That could be a result of feeling empowered and safe in order to make that report."

The FBI says it sees striking similarities in the in-flight sexual assaults. The attacks generally occur on long flights when the cabin is dark. Victims are usually sitting in middle or window seats. Victims are usually sleeping and covered with a blanket or jacket. Victims report waking up to their neighbors hands under their clothes.
