Deputy shot while serving warrant released from hospital

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. James Smejkal, who was shot while trying to serve a warrant on Tuesday, was released from the hospital and will continue his recovery from home.

In a Twitter post on Friday, HCSO said that doctors at Ben Taub Hospital were able to save Sgt. Smejkal's fingers.

Sgt. Smejkal, along with two investigators with the Texas Attorney General's office, were wounded while trying to serve a felony warrant in north Houston.

After a standoff that lasted several hours, the shooting suspect, later identified as Daniel Trevino, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the HCSO.
