Debates on skin bleaching resurface after recent 'Love and Hip Hop Atlanta' episode

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - It's been around for decades, but it's seems to be having a resurgence of late - skin bleaching or lightening.

It is advertised as a way to get rid of dark spots and blemishes, and is popular in the Caribbean, Africa and India. According to the World Health Organization, 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin lightening products.

It seems like some American celebrities have lightened their skin, but that could be due to lighting or makeup.

Unfortunately, there are people who think lightening their skin makes them more attractive and gives them an economic advantage.

One of the stars of "Love and Hip Hop," dance hall sensation Spice, recently made headlines when she decided to lighten her skin as a way to gain attention on the subject.
