Boynton Beach police smash window, rescue dog from hot car (VIDEO)

Police used a baton to smash out a window to rescue a dog from a hot car in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Officers said they responded to a parking lot in Sunshine Square after a Good Samaritan called 911 Monday morning.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a pit bull inside a blue Buick with all the windows up. Authorities estimated the temperature inside the vehicle to be at least 110 degrees.

After attempting to locate the dog’s owner, Sgt. John Dunlop jumped into action and used his baton to break a window and rescue the dog.

Officials said 10 to 15 minutes later, the owner came back and said she had left her pet, which was a rescue dog, inside the car while she ran into the bank.

The owner was cited for "dog left unattended in a vehicle," according to police.

“Repeat after us...it is never OK to leave your pet in an unattended vehicle. It is illegal and if you do it in the City of Boynton Beach, you are going to be cited for it - at a minimum,” the Boynton Beach Police Department wrote on its Facebook page. “Our advice, stop being lazy (harsh, yes, but true). Bring your pet home and then go back out to run whatever errands you need to do.”
