Adopt A Veteran program in Texas City school

Heights Elementary School in Texas City has launched its Adopt A Veteran program. Military veterans will interact with students throughout the year, becoming part of a living textbook.

The idea for the program emerged in 2013 when third grade students had volunteered to help place flags at the Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery for Memorial Day.

The year-round program is able to continue thanks to the Texas City Independent School District Foundation for the Future grant. Bill and Karyn Marshall, the founders of the program, were awarded the Heart of Patriotism in 2018 from the Texas chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

FOX 26 News photographer Darlene Janik Faires was there for the welcome party.
