Construction worker dies after trench collapse in southwest Houston, police say

Authorities say one person is dead after firefighters responded to an apartment complex in southwest Houston for a trench rescue on Wednesday.

What we know:

The Houston Fire Department responded to the 8901 block of Bissonnet Street for an "unknown collapse." When the first crew arrived and found the trench, they upgraded the call to a trench collapse.

Officials say two construction workers were in the trench when it collapsed. Houston fire officials say the hole was about eight feet deep and 25 feet wide.

One construction worker was able to free himself from the trench. Other workers and Houston fire officials freed the other trapped worker. They tried to perform life-saving measures on the second worker, but he was later pronounced dead.
