Recipe: Guilt-free pumpkin spice latte

The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte is wildly popular with more than 424 million sold a year

But dietitians will say, drink in moderation – it packs a sugary punch.

We asked Jennifer Cleveland, registered dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine, to whip us up something "guilt free".

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

½ cup 2% or whole milk, divided

1 tbsp. canned pumpkin puree

1 tsp. pure maple syrup

¼ tsp. pumpkin pie spice

1 serving brewed coffee or espresso

Suggested tool:  Handheld milk frother

In a tall, microwave safe glass, combine ¼ cup milk, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, and pumpkin pie spice.  Microwave for 10-15 seconds to warm.  Use handheld milk frother to blend.  In your coffee cup, combine the milk mixture and coffee or espresso.  In a separate glass, froth remaining ¼ cup milk.  Top coffee mixture with foam and enjoy!

Dairy-free substitution:  unsweetened soy milk or oat milk
